Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is a pro-active approach to network security used to identify potential threats and respond to them promptly. IPS monitors network traffic to detect and prevent vulnerability exploits and has the ability to take immediate action based on a set of rules established by the network administrator.

These actions include:
- Sending an alarm to the administrator (as would be seen in an IDS)
- Dropping the malicious packets
- Blocking traffic from the source address
- Resetting the connection
